What is the functional difference, if any, between Visa and Mastercard?

I’m not asking about any specific bank’s cards (like, say, Chase Visa, or Capital One Mastercard, or whatever). I’m asking about Visa as a whole vs. Mastercard as a whole. Any place that takes one takes the other. So why would you want a Visa card over a Mastercard or vice versa?
Please, people. An advertising slogan is not an answer. Next I expect you’ll be telling me, “Visa. It’s what plants crave.”
